As always people are using the Symposium to launch an array of new zines. A bunch of people have let us know what they’re releasing, so read on to find out what new tasty treats will be waiting for you at the Symposium.

Melanie Madison, who’s running the ‘Creating our own culture discussion‘, has produced a zine to go alongside it Taking cultural production into our own hands. It features a whole load of interviews with people involved in the DIY, zine, activist and punk communities about their thoughts on how to create culture. It’ll be launched at the ‘Creating our own culture discussion’ at 3.30pm.

Two other people who’re involved with talks are also releasing their new zines on Saturday. The always awesome Charlotte Cooper is releasing a new zine called ‘Recycled’. In her own words, ‘I’ve amassed a mini-mountain of things that I’ve made so I thought I’d go back and look at my older zines and recycle some of the bits I liked best in the hope that other people would like them too. I’ve included some forgotten bits, some bits that were never published, some new bits, and some bits that I’ve rewritten. Subjects include being in a pretend band, visiting a strange and beautiful place in the Arctic Circle, the Spice Girls, sex, and a dog’s funeral.’ She’s gonna be giving them away for free to anyone who’s interested on the day! Chella Quint will also be doing a brief talk at ‘Read what you wrote’, and is releasing the fifth issue of Adventures in Menstruation. It’s five years since the first one came out, which means that people who bought the first copy should be five years through their ten year cycle charts!

Moving in a slightly different direction Greymatter (above) also has a new zine out, with contributions from Belgrade, Barcelona, Athens, Dublin, Rome, Tehran and Singapore. The booklet is A5, but folds out to A2 with various different paper types and printing used throughout it’s bound to look cool. It also includes a CD.

Antagonist zine will be releasing their fifth issue. A cool little punk zine, it has interviews with Tony Sly (No Use for a Name) and Brian Wahlstrom (punk piano genius!) and reviews of Gogol Bordello and Hole. Not to mention the usual columns and articles, including an article challenging the negative perception of tattoos.

Sugar Paper are also releasing their fifth issue with an issue dedicated to 20 (crafty) things to make and do, including 3D cross stitch, knitted coasters, word search, crochet necklace and much more.

The Lazy Soosan Alphabet Series will also be releasing two new zines at the symposium. They’ve made it up to ‘F’ and ‘G’ of the series, which both feature 26 illustrations relating to the letter from Lucy and Laura in a cute A6 format.

There are quite a few new perzines coming out for the Symposium, which is awesome. Louise Viner will be releasing issue 3 of Tempest in a teacup, which features tales of love, sex, feminism, porn, mental health and much more. It’s a half size zine with lots of old vintage adverts for decoration. Should be awesome.

Jen Fox will be coming out with Looking out of your window, which in her own words is, ‘a perzine that I write about people who I meet that make the world seem more amazing.’ Simple really.

Not quite a perzine, but somewhere in the area is ?aban’s new comic-zine, Gissa Job about his experiences signing on, dealing with the job centre and trying to find new work. If it’s anything like his previous comics it should be mint!

Fortunes from the Seasick are releasing two new zines. They’re not perzines, but are definitely curious. Dan, who runs the distro can fill you in, ‘One of the zines is entirely under my own name, it’s called The Ship of Fools and it is a dark-humoured exploration into the human mind via a series of black and blue stories, confessions and reviews. The second is a strange thing which I can’t even make sense of, it’s called ‘Anywhere Out of This World’ by the ‘Anywhere Out of This World Collective’ – me, John Effra, Oscar Raven and a couple of anonymous people. It’s a guide-book on how to live differently in this world, or escape entirely. I’m hoping to launch both at the stall.’

I’m cheating really because The Year of the Monkey has been out for a couple of months now, but it hasn’t really been available anywhere, and I haven’t had a chance to finish off the zines ‘Nasty Ends for Nasty Authoritarians‘ and ‘The Wall’ that I was hoping to, so I will be pushing my book collecting a year’s worth of diary comics instead.

Also launching of course will be The London Zine Symposium: tales from the first five years, which features stories from Phil Chokeword, Kathleen Teadrinker, Luke Ont Road; comics from Hey Monkey Riot, Pete Willis and Isy Morgenmuffel; as well as fliers, workshops and stall holder details from all the first five Symposia. It’s only £3, and will be available on the London Zine Symposium and Last Hours stalls.

Oh, and last, but definitely not least, Pete Willis is going to be releasing a new zine called MAXHO. It’s subtitle is “the story of the makhnovschina” but its just the first part. A4 with a card cover. basically an illustrated telling of Nestor Makhno from his imprisonment to the german-austrian army leaving the ukraine after the end of the first world war. He says he’ll only have 20 copies, which means he’ll have 19 because I’ll have bought a copy before he’s made it to the Symposium. It’ll no doubt be awesome!!!

If you’ve got a zine coming out at this year’s Symposium that we haven’t mentioned here, let everyone know in the comments below!

We’re looking for stories about the symposium from our friends around the country. Write about a zine you made, workshop you went to, or just the people you hung out with. We’re looking for stories between 400 and 800 words. Or if you’d rather, you can contribute finished art, if you want to send illustrations or comics (2 or 4 pages of finished art). The final book is going to be A6, so make sure it’ll fit. Please send contributions to edd@rnzine.co.uk.

The deadline’s really soon – April 2nd – but hopefully it’ll give you enough time!
